How to share an article without offending someone who has a family member like most of us who is mentally ill but not in a hospital or in a secure facility is a difficult thing. So do not be offended but rather be educated and encouraged to know that mental illness has been with humanity since Adam and Eve sinned in the garden. That is a long history of mental illness that many today do not want to acknowledge their love ones who are either gone or almost gone mentally.
You would think that if people really cared about other people they would encourage their loved ones to stay on their medication or seek healing from the Lord! In any case people who are on prescribed medication should stay on it until they are certified healed by a doctor or medical professional. Others who are not on medication but know that something is wrong should go quickly to a doctor for a check-up to determine what is the diagnosis for their ailment. I believe family that knows something is wrong with a family member and they do not do anything about it is as guilty as the one who molest someone or kills others.
The family member(s) who turned their head to pretend nothing is wrong should experience the same punishment as the guilty party. You are probably saying to yourself he is really stepping on the issue hard at the beginning of the article and you are right; I am doing this because many will read only so far and stop because they think this is an impossible area to conquer. It is but so is life when you refuse to get your arms around the issue. Tough situations are for tough people who have a desire to see and implement the necessary change anyway they can.
According to a recent report by the Kim Foundation, this is what they say about the situation “An estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older or about one in four adults suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. When applied to the 2004 U.S. Census residential population estimate for ages 18 and older, this figure translates to 57.7 million people.” There are number of reports to be found but this one was the most accessible at the time of the writing this article. If you are one that needs to see numbers (quantitative data) or life situations (qualitative data) then I would encourage you to actively do your own research concerning mental illness.
Mental and behavioral disorders:
- Brain Damage
- Personality disorders
- Psychoactive substance use
- Schizophrenia, schizotypal and delusional disorders
- Mood (affective) disorders
- Neurotic, stress-related and somatoform disorders
- Behavioral syndromes associated with physiological disturbances and physical factors
- Disorders of adult personality and behavior
- Mental retardation
- Disorders of psychological development
- Behavioral and emotional disorders with onset usually occurring in childhood and adolescence
- Unspecified mental disorder
The above categories were found in the Wikipedia. I believe all the above mentioned and their tributaries can be healed by God. God the creator of the body not only can make it but he can also heal it.
There have been enough school killings, terrorist killing by people whose families have said they knew something was wrong and other varied types of abuse carried out by someone who is not all there because of mental illness. These kinds of behavior are a clear red-flag that mental illness is a major issue in America.
The fact that President Ronald Reagan failed to continue the funding of mental illness programs while he was President of the United States and Governor of California led to the increase number of homelessness and mental ill people in the street to the point where institutions closed forever. What is ironic about the number of people without medical help is the fact the man who tried to assassinate President Regan is in a psychiatric hospital; John Hinckley is a man suffering from several different types of personality disorders.
I believe this behavior by President Ronald Reagan and others over time is a fulfillment of the first scripture in the Holy Bible that alludes to the fact there would be mental illness issues because God said in Deuteronomy 28:65 (KJV) 65 And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind: The last part of the verse is the curse that was initially put on the Israelites for disobedience and relates to all human kind as one of the negative promises in the Holy Bible. Sorrow of mind relates to mental illness and its associated sicknesses. This is one of the by-products of disobedience when you fail to do what God commanded.
In Deuteronomy 30 we find that God comes back from the blessings and curses of chapter 28 to give us the suggestion that humanity make the choice of life rather than death. It is stated like this in Deuteronomy 30:19 (KJV) 19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: I believe this is where God gives us a hint or suggestion how we should live by making the choice for life rather than death. God created us as free moral agents and I believe this is the verse that gives us the ability to make our choice(s) regardless of what it is.
The catch in this scripture is if you do not make a choice for life or God you automatically choose death there is no in-between. God will not make us choose what is right but when we come to our senses His hope is that we will make the right choice. When a person is in their right mind they make right choices and when they are misguided and out-of-their minds people make bad choices. There are consequences for our choices.
The Lord gives us a promise if we keep our minds stayed on Him: Isaiah 26:3 (KJV) 3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. This scripture may be another reason why so many people commit suicide and have nervous breakdowns. The Lord says He will keep us in perfect (complete) peace if we keep our minds (brains, soul and emotions) stayed on Him because we trust Him. How many people really trust the Lord? Do you?
This is a very important point in scripture that many forget: Hebrews 11:6 (KJV) 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Faith to me is synonymous with trust; you must have faith to trust. This is one of the many reasons I question America being a God-fearing country. If you trust God you do things very differently than what we have seen so often in America with so many men beating their chest as to what they have accomplished.
The Lord gives another very strong hint in the Word how to ensure sanity by obeying the following scripture: Philippians 4:8 (KJV) 8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
The above scripture is one that if analyzed in detail would give you and I all the things that we should keep on our mind to maintain complete sanity. You are probably saying that is difficult to do when there are so many things in the world to think on! It is a challenge of taking control of one’s thoughts and intentions and keeping them in a positive perspective by focusing on the things that are just, pure, and lovely and of a good report. Controlling our own mind is something we can do since the Apostle Paul said to the Philippian church in the above scripture “Finally, brethren,” it was written to believers who explicitly trust in God.
For those who are born with a brain impediment to come into complete sanity is by yielding to the Lord and seeking healing. God is sovereign and He heals who he selects and those that exercise faith as we find in this next scripture: Matthew 17:14-18 (KJV) 14 And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, 15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. 16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.
17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. 18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. The scripture lets us know that Jesus healed the lunatic (Mentally Ill) that very hour.
One way to maintain sanity in the flesh and in the spirit is by obeying the following scripture: Romans 12:2 (KJV) 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. The scripture tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our mind which we can do by trusting Him and meditating on His Word.
God has given us many promises and gifts but this one is to believers specifically because the world has fear from their father the Devil. In 2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV) 7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. God has not given us the spirit of fear because it is given by the Devil, but God has given us power, love and a sound mind! I should probably end this article by asking do you have a sound mind, but there is a little more.
The Apostle Paul gives the admonition in Philippians 2:2 (KJV) 2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind and Philippians 2:5 5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Each of these verses is powerful in their own right so let’s look at them individually. What a word of inspiration when it says “Fulfill ye my joy, that ye be likeminded…” I believe only people who have real joy from the Lord can be likeminded. How can you be likeminded if you do not have the same mind as Jesus? The most powerful scripture in the Holy Bible about the mind says “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus!”
How does a person get the mind of Christ Jesus! You should first surrender to Him and make Him your Lord and Savior according to Romans 10:8-9 (KJV) 8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. After accepting Him as Lord and Savior you have the opportunity to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of tongues in order to have the power promised by Jesus Christ. Receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost is not what saves you according to the Word, it only give you the added power over the enemy – the Devil and his forces (Demons).
The last point I wish to make is that to have the true mind of Christ Jesus is to learn how to live separately from the world even though you are walking among the world every day. It is a principal espoused in the Old and New Testament. In the Old Testament it is stated like this: Psalm 1:1-2 (KJV) 1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
I believe this scripture needs to be used once more for the New Testament posture that we should all strive to attain every day: Philippians 2:5 (KJV) 5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.
Do you have control of your mind?
