Who wants the “Gift”?

Article 37

If you were at church recently you heard me ask this question at the 11:30 AM service. It is a non-threatening and provocative question that should stir intrigue in you if you don’t have the gift. There are over 5900 or more promises in the Holy Bible and they all are worthless if not accessed by believers; those promises are for us today. There are those who say the promises stop with the death of Jesus on the cross which is a lie. There are promises all the way from Genesis to Revelation that still apply to us today.

The promise this article will focus on was given to the Prophet Joel to declare and decree in Joel 2:28-29 (KJV) 28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: 29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

God had Joel write “And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.” I  pour out my spirit is a personal statement made by God the Father that he would do “in those days!” Those days were days after the prophecy was made which includes these days. I find nothing in the Bible that says this prophecy has been rescinded by God the Father. In Numbers 23:19 (KJV) 19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? God tells the truth and truth is God.

God said he would pour out his spirit. Jesus knowing what was said by God the Father speaks to his disciples and others a reiteration of what God said through the Prophet Joel by telling them they would have to go and wait on the promise: Luke 24:49 (KJV) 49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.  Many followers of Christ today have been told they do not need to tarry, but Jesus said tarry in the city of Jerusalem. I do not understand people who today change the scripture that plainly says “TARRY!” I learned the hard way as others if you want to be successful in life follow instructions to the letter. Jesus said “TARRY!”

All tarry means is to wait until a certain time passes. We will find out later in the article that the disciples, the mother of Jesus and his brothers tarried some 50 days before the promised gift arrived. Are you willing to tarry for the free gift God the Father wants you to have? Some people who are ready to receive the gift will tarry or wait just a few minutes once they hear the word. That can happen to you if you are ready to receive the word.

After Jesus had instructed them to tarry in Jerusalem he further instructed them: why they needed to tarry and what to wait for. The purpose of tarrying was to wait on the promised gift – the pouring out “my spirit!” Jesus knew his father had made a promise through the Prophet Joel and Jesus wanted his disciples and others to know how to receive it. After knowing how to receive the promise by tarrying or waiting on it they needed to know its purpose. Jesus clearly tells them in  Acts 1:8 (KJV) 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

The reason to tarry or wait was to receive power once the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit overshadowed them. Jesus said you shall receive power. Any time you see that word “shall” in the King James version of the Bible or any Bible version it means it is a guarantee that something was going to happen. You could stake your life on it if you have that kind of faith. I know there are denominations and non-denominations that do not believe it necessary to activate this gift promised by Jesus. Many of those who do not believe say the promised gift was only for those in the Book of Acts and others living in Bible times.

I do not know all the reasons people give that do not accept the promise as being for today and frankly I do not care to know there lame excuses for rejecting what Jesus promised. What I do know is that the gift promised truly is a helper as committed by Jesus. To me the proof is in the pudding, which means that the gift for me has been an excellent helper when I allowed it to do its job. It is hard to convince me it does not work since I received it with the evidence of tongues in March 1957, some 60 years ago. I am biased that it works because it has worked effectively in my life when I allowed the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit to do its job. I regularly practice Jude 20!

Those who fight the gift obviously are not into believing and receiving the promises of God. Deeper than that is the fact these individuals are more than likely the rebellious types. I must also admit there are those who really believe that you will go to heaven without exercising the promise of the father.

I do not see anywhere in the whole Bible that says you must have the Holy Ghost with the evidence of tongues in order to be saved. What I do see is that you are saved by grace and not of works. The word says this: Ephesians 2:8 (KJV) 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: The elements for salvation are: Romans 10:9-10 (KJV) 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

If you are willing to obey Jesus command lets see what his disciples and even his mother and biological brothers did to receive the gift. These next verses share with us what they did after Jesus returned to heaven. They saw him go up in a cloud and immediately they followed his instructions to them: Acts 1:12-14 (KJV) 12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day’s journey. 13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. 14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. They immediately went back to Jerusalem to the upper room and began their wait on the promise God the Father promised and what Jesus had told them to go and wait for the Holy Ghost.

I believe obedience is better than sacrifice which means to me to obey the Lord Jesus Christ rather than sacrifice by disobeying his command. I believe when you disobey you are saying I believe I can make it on my own I do not need the power in my life to live holy. A lot of people think that when they accepted the Lord Jesus Christ according to Romans 10: 8 – 10 they received the Lord Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. They received him but they were not filled by Holy Ghost according to Acts 1:8. To receive him is a critical step in the process of becoming close to him but it does not equip you to do the work of dealing with the enemy (the Devil). The reason we know this to be true is because if the disciples and all those following him had what they needed when he ascended back to heaven he would told them to go save people and cast out devils soon as he left.

If God had told them that that meant they had obeyed Romans 10:8 -10 and could do everything he did with no power to do it. Instead God gave them a detour to do before they were to go into all the world as stated in Matthew 28:19. Here is an experiment you might try at your own risk: Go and cast some devils out before you receive the power as stated in Acts 1:8 and see what happens to you and the person you are trying to cast the demons out of!

Once you are convinced in your spirit that you do not have the power promised in Acts 1:8 you then should follow the lead of the disciples and Jesus mother along with his brothers to find a place to tarry or wait on the promise. Remember Jesus baptized only his disciples, his mother and brothers in water and I encourage you to be baptized in water if you have not been. I would rather obey Jesus than some men who seem to do their best to find alternatives to the word of the Lord. After you have been baptized then find a place to tarry or wait to receive that promise.

You will see at the end of this article that while Peter preached the promise fell on some believers. If you do not get the promise while reading this article or listening to someone preach then find an altar at your meeting place or at your home and tarry/wait for the promise. It’s for you if you will receive it.

While all those who obeyed Jesus were waiting in the upper room on the fiftieth day after Jesus return to heaven the promise finally appeared in the next verses as like a fire and cloven tongues that sat upon each of them – the promise declared and decreed by Joel and further reiterated by Jesus. They all waited in one place in one accord and the promise was delivered by the Holy Spirit. Understand that today we that have the Holy Ghost with the evidence of tongues will share how we got it but for now read what happened on the first appearing of the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit: Acts 2:1-4 (KJV) 1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance

The key to understand is that when you are filled with the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit you will speak in an unknown tongue guided by the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit. Only the Father knows what is coming out of your spirit to Him through the guidance of the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit. When you get it you will know it and the forces of darkness will know because now you are a direct threat to the Kingdom of Satan. Remember Jude 20! After they received and were filled by the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit Peter preached to those people who immediately heard them getting the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit and those who the word spread to. He preached that what Joel the Prophet had declared and decreed had been fulfilled by the believers obeying and tarrying/waiting as Jesus had instructed. Peter repeated what Prophet Joel had said: Acts 2:17-18 (KJV) 17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: 18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

As you study the book of Acts you will find other scriptures that identify those who received the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit. The following passages is just one that shows what happen to other believers: Acts 10:44 (KJV) 44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

Do you want it?

Are you willing to waiting on it?

Are you willing to place yourself in one place with your mind on receiving the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit?

If you need my wife, myself and others to set up a tarrying/waiting session, will you come and tarry/wait for it?
