Why not – because the Word of God gives many examples of deception that if you study enough your sensitivity to deceptive behavior is heighten. The reason for this article now is that the use of deception by the enemy is at an all-time high I believe. Each person must be extremely careful when entering into any type of relationship with so many people uncertain about who they are. You need to know who you are and the person(s) you are entering relationship with really knows self. The older generations I believe understand that God made them in His likeness and image. Each one is a male or female; because society says you can be born in, the wrong body does not change God’s creation.
What we know is that the scripture informs us that Adam and Eve were born perfect, but when sin entered in by the deception of the snake that was the first instance of deception in the Bible. You have to know that the first bit of deception included a simple lie. Just think of all the lying that goes on in our society and the church today. Yes, I said the church. What I mean by that is the many loving Christians tell little white lies and think nothing of it. The serpent said to Eve in Genesis 3:4 (KJV) 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: The serpent said the opposite of what God said – you shall surely die.
The woman believed the serpent over God – why! The scripture tells us that the serpent was more subtle than any other beast of the field. We must understand that the woman did not know she was any different than, the beast of the field. The serpent at that time was walking around like a human being. Think about it, the woman had the encounter with the serpent not Adam. The serpent tells the lie to the woman and not the man who received the original command not to eat of the fruit of the tree of life.
So many deceived by the sleight of hand by saying the lie to the person who did not receive the original message. Be very careful when you enter the crossfire. Eve did not know that she was had until the Lord came walking in the garden in the cool of the day and ask Adam – where are you?
In Genesis, we find Abraham using deception twice for fear of his life. A prophet who did not know the Lord would cover him without him telling a lie. He said this in Genesis 12:13 (KJV) 13 Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee. The second time he said to the king Genesis 20:1-2 (KJV) 1 And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar. 2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah. Because of cowardice and fear, Abraham used deception as an offensive tool. You must be careful not to use a negative for a positive. Our enemy the devil uses any mistake we make to garner an entryway into our spirit to bring you into bondage. Once the enemy gets in it is difficult to remove him or his demons.
We find a case of two on one when Rebekah and Jacob team up to steal the birthright from Esau. This example of the use of deception illustrates in Genesis 27:6 – 23 how pretending and camaflogue worked to deceive an old man. You can deceive by your actions as well as your words. Be wise when you get into a situation that is foreign to you do not be afraid to seek wise counsel.
Lying by Joseph’s brothers to their father about Joseph killed illustrate how lying is used as a deceptive tool. The story of Joseph’s brothers as describe in Genesis 34:13 – 31 shows how a group sometimes work to do evil. I know the scripture says in one place behold how good and pleasant for brethren (sisters) to dwell together in unity. I believe when you join a group whether family or friends that you get to know the intent of the group’s intentions.
As you can see, much deception occurred in the book of Genesis, the book of first things. I believe God set it up that way to give us warning to the damage done by deceivers and deception.
Sex used to coerce Samson to tell his secret by deceiving him with false love. We live in a day so similar to the story of Samson finds men and women using sex to deceive each other. Samson’s story stands out in the Bible because Samson called a judge by God deceived by physical beauty. The story in Judges 16:4 – 20 illustrates how Delilah used her body to seduce Samson. Today you must be extremely careful of the relations you involve yourself to ensure no seduction.
I suspect the most painful use of deception occurred when Absalom set his brother up to be slaughter for raping his sister Tamar. Amnon lied to his father David when he asked David to allow Tamara to prepare a meal for him because he was sick. Amnon laid a dirty trap for his sister. In the end analysis at the right time, Absalom invited all the King David’s sons to a feast with the intent to avenge his sister Tamara. The story unfolds very clearly in II Samuel 13. In the story, David was deceived as well as Tamara and yet when Absalom knew what had happened he never said it out-loud but hid it in his heart how to destroy Amnon. Sometime it is better to just carryout your plan without disclosure.
With so many false pastors, prophets and teachers it is necessary to examine this next story of the false prophet who lied. A certain man in scripture was told by God to not do something then he spoke to a man of God as described in 1 Kings 13:18 (KJV) 18He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him. The man of God lied and because the certain man trusted the words of the prophet, he lost his life because of disobedience. You must always obey the voice of God over any man or woman’s voice. That being broken down to mean when God speaks to you through the Word of God the Bible or if you hear him audibly speak to your spirit you must heed it or face judgement. The only way you can heed the Word of God is by knowing the Bible.
The most devastating deception is self-deception as
described by Doeg in Psalm 52:2 (KJV)
2 Thy tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. Do not allow your own tongue to deceive others by saying you is single but you are married. Stop lying to yourself because when you lie to yourself you also lie to others. Self-deception causes some to be delusional and disoriented. One of the worst things is for a leader/pastor to be self-deceived thinking they are God’s gift to men when they in actuality are tolerated and despised.
Deception finds its way to the New Testament in Matthew 2:8 (KJV) 8And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. Herod’s intent in his heart was to kill the child Jesus. This reminds us of any person who has a call on their life the Devil is determine to kill, steal and destroy them one way or another. The Holy Spirit guided those men a different way home to protect the young child. Today the Holy Spirit protects many children from the attempt of the Devil to destroy them. If you are one like me who God protected at birth from the plot of the enemy, you need to tell your story.
My father given the choice by the doctor to save my life as an unborn child or that of my mother chose to seek prayer from around the country of the saints of God for both of us. My mother lived after my birth fifty years and began using her gift thirty-five years after my birth. God blessed me to be here seventy-three years today to encourage the saints of God to be keen against the spirit of deception. It appears in many forms and likeness that is essentially a lie. Be careful.
The most striking example of deception and lying occurs in Acts 5:1 – 11 where Ananias and Sapphira conspire to tempt the Lord. I believe where there is a true man or woman of God when a person comes with a lie the Holy Spirit reveals to them the plot. This couple conspired an unnecessary lie that cost both of them their life. God knows all and sees all and to deceive the man or woman of God is extremely dangerous even in this day and time. Because the scripture lets us know that, you reap what you sow. If you sow a lie you reap more than you planned. God’s multiplication is not like ours, because you reap more than you do sow. The scripture says in Galatians 6:7 (ASV) 7Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
Do not be deceived ask questions until you come to the truth!
